Saint Gervais

Saint Gervais is the snow chaser's pick in Evasion Mont Blanc because its Mont Joly and Le Bettex sectors climb higher and hold cooler, more reliable snow than the rest of the domain, with the best north facing pitches and off piste lines when it dumps.

The old spa town has more soul and better value than Megeve, and a tram and gondola carry you up to the Mont Blanc side. It is the base I would choose for an early thaw or a storm week, accepting a slightly less glossy evening scene.

Combloux

Combloux is the quiet, sunny, family friendly value choice, a small linked village famous for framing Mont Blanc straight across the valley. It plugs into the same pass and the same network as Megeve for noticeably less money.

The terrain is gentle and sun facing, which is lovely on a bluebird midwinter day and the weakest for snow in a warm spell, so treat it as a calm base to sleep and a launch pad into the bigger domain. Families and first timers do very well here.

Les Contamines Montjoie

Les Contamines is the contrarian snow pick, a separate ski area on the Evasion pass tucked into a shaded, north leaning valley that quietly holds the best natural cover in the whole region. It skis far emptier than Megeve.

It is a low key, traditional village with a real mountain feel rather than a glamorous one, and the terrain rewards confident intermediates and powder hunters more than it rewards people who came for the shopping. We do not yet publish a full review of this base.

Saint Nicolas de Veroce
