Valloire

Valloire keeps a genuine old village around its baroque church and links into the Galibier Thabor area shared with Valmeinier for roughly 150 km of pistes. That combination of character and size is rare at this price point, and the mostly intermediate terrain suits a wide group.

The base at around 1,430 m is on the lower side, so a warm spring can thin the home runs, but the upper mountain holds snow well. For travelers who want a village with a soul and plenty of mileage, Valloire is the pick.

Bonneval sur Arc

The most beautiful and snow sure resort in the valley, for skiers who value setting over size.

Bonneval sur Arc sits at the very head of the Maurienne at around 1,800 m, classed among the most beautiful villages in France, with a small but high and reliable ski area reaching close to 3,000 m. The snow record here is the best in the valley and the old stone village is almost entirely free of cars.

The ski area is compact, so mileage hungry intermediates will exhaust it in a few days, but the scenery, snow and ski touring access are exceptional. For a quiet, photogenic base with the best snow in the Maurienne, it is unmatched.

La Toussuire

The most convenient base for Les Sybelles, the valley's largest linked ski area.

La Toussuire is the main gateway into Les Sybelles, which links six resorts for around 300 km of pistes, the biggest ski area in the Maurienne. Sitting at around 1,800 m on a sunny plateau, it offers easy, wide cruising that is ideal for families and improving intermediates.

The village itself is functional rather than charming, and the terrain rarely tests strong skiers, but the size and the snow sure altitude are the draws. For a group that wants to clock big distances on gentle pistes, it is the obvious choice.

Saint Sorlin d Arves

The most characterful Sybelles base, with sunny terrain and glacier views.

Saint Sorlin d Arves keeps more of a working village feel than the purpose built Sybelles resorts and offers some of the most enjoyable, sunny terrain in the linked area, with views to the Aiguilles d'Arves. The same roughly 300 km Sybelles pass applies, so size is not the limit.

The lower slopes can suffer in warm spells given the base around 1,600 m, and the village spreads out, but the atmosphere and the skiing are a notch above its neighbors. For Sybelles size with a little more soul, it is the smart base.

Aussois

A quiet, sunny and friendly family resort with a real village and gentle prices.

Aussois is a small, sunny resort on a south facing balcony with around 55 km of mostly easy and intermediate pistes and a genuine village below the historic Esseillon forts. It is calm, affordable and well suited to young families and nervous intermediates who do not need a huge area.

Strong skiers will find it limited, and there is little nightlife, but that quiet is exactly the appeal for the right group. For a relaxed, low cost family week, Aussois punches above its size.

Valmeinier

A convenient, family friendly base sharing the big Galibier Thabor area with Valloire.

Valmeinier pairs a modern, ski in ski out upper village at Valmeinier 1800 with the same roughly 150 km Galibier Thabor area as Valloire, giving easy slope access at lower prices than the Tarentaise. The terrain is forgiving and well suited to families and intermediates.

It lacks the old village character of Valloire and the upper resort is purpose built, but the convenience and value are strong. For ski in ski out ease in the area, it is the practical pick.

La Norma

La Norma is a small, traffic free purpose built resort above Modane with around 65 km of pistes and quick ski in ski out access from the apartments. The car free layout and gentle terrain make it a calm, safe choice for families with young children.

The area is modest and the architecture functional, so it will not satisfy mileage seekers or expert skiers. As a fuss free, affordable family base with good train access at Modane, it is a sensible pick.

Le Corbier

Les Karellis is a small, car light cooperative resort above Saint Jean de Maurienne with around 60 km of surprisingly varied, north facing pistes that hold snow well and see very few crowds. It is genuinely cheap, friendly and a favorite of in the know French families.

It is self contained and remote feeling, with little nightlife and no linked area, so it suits independent skiers over those wanting buzz or size. As the under the radar value pick of the valley, it is a treat.
