Best for a day, a weekend, a value week
For a quick weekend, Zakopane is the obvious base. The town is lively and cheap, the Kasprowy Wierch cable car gives the most serious local skiing, and the village hills and nearby Bialka Tatrzanska are excellent for beginners and families at giveaway prices.
For a value week with better snow security, cross into Slovakia. Jasna in the Low Tatras is the largest and highest area within reach, with proper vertical and far more reliable snow than the lower Polish hills, and it still costs a fraction of an Alpine week. Be honest about what this is: the Tatras are compact and the lift networks small by Alpine standards, so strong skiers will ski out a resort in a day or two. Transfers and the practical bits
Krakow has a busy international airport served by plenty of low cost flights, which is the first piece of the value puzzle. From the city you head south on improving roads to Zakopane in around two hours, with the Slovak resorts a further hour or so over the border. Roads can be slow on peak Polish weekends, when Zakopane fills with day trippers.
