Espace Killy

The Espace Killy links Val d'Isere and Tignes into one of the most snow sure ski areas in the Alps, around 300 km of high, reliable pistes under a single lift pass. If your priority is dependable snow and serious mileage from December to April, this is the safest bet in France. The only real decision is which of the two villages you sleep in, because the skiing is shared.

What it is

Two resorts, one high arena

The Espace Killy joins Val d'Isere and Tignes across a high shoulder of the French Tarentaise, named after the triple Olympic champion Jean Claude Killy. Almost all of the terrain sits between 1,800 m and 3,400 m, which is why the snow holds when lower resorts struggle. Tignes adds the Grande Motte glacier, so there is even some skiing outside the normal season.

Because the area is shared, your choice of base is mostly about atmosphere. Val d'Isere is the smarter, livelier village with better dining and apres, while Tignes is higher, more functional and the most snow sure of the two. Wherever you stay, the whole linked network is on your pass.

Who it suits

Is the Espace Killy right for you?

This is the region for keen skiers and mixed groups who put snow first. Intermediates get endless high blue and red mileage, and experts have the famous Face de Bellevarde, steep couloirs and a wealth of off piste with a guide. Beginners are catered for too, though the high, open terrain feels less cozy than a tree lined resort lower down.

It is less ideal if you want a small storybook village or guaranteed long lunches in the sun, where charm focused areas serve you better. For more linked mileage and a wider choice of villages, compare the neighboring Les Trois Vallees and Paradiski, or read our wider France guide.

Pass and logistics

Getting there and getting around

Geneva is the usual gateway, roughly three hours by road to either resort. A full Espace Killy adult day pass runs around $62, with multi day passes better value, and there is often a glacier or beginner only option for first weeks. Both villages are well set up for ski in ski out lodging, so you can step from the door onto the snow.

Book the extras and save

Lift passes, airport transfers and lessons are where a trip quietly leaks money. Booking ahead almost always beats the resort window price.

Espace Killy FAQs

What is the Espace Killy?

The Espace Killy is the linked ski area shared by Val d'Isere and Tignes in the French Tarentaise, around 300 km of pistes under one lift pass. It is named after the Olympic champion Jean Claude Killy and is among the most snow sure areas in the Alps.

Should I stay in Val d'Isere or Tignes?

Choose Val d'Isere for a smarter village with the best dining and apres, and Tignes for higher altitude, the most reliable snow and glacier skiing. Both put the whole linked area on your pass, so the decision is about atmosphere and budget rather than terrain.

How snow sure is the Espace Killy?

Very. Almost all of the terrain sits above 1,800 m and rises beyond 3,400 m on the Grande Motte glacier, so the area holds reliable cover from December into late April. It is one of the safest snow bets in France.

Is the Espace Killy good for beginners?

Yes, with caveats. There are gentle greens and good ski schools in both villages, but the terrain is high and open rather than tree lined, which some first timers find exposed. Confident beginners and improving intermediates get the most from it.

What does an Espace Killy lift pass cost?

A full area adult day pass runs around $62, with multi day passes offering better value. Glacier only and beginner passes are usually available for a first week. We can build the right pass into your trip when we price it.

How do I get to Val d'Isere and Tignes?

Geneva is the main gateway, roughly three hours by road to either resort. Lyon, Chambery and Grenoble are alternatives that can be closer in some conditions. We match the right airport and transfer when we price the trip.
