Who it suits

Canyons Village suits families and intermediates who value convenience and a stress free arrival above all else. It is ski in ski out from a compact, modern pedestrian base, the airport is barely 40 minutes away, and the terrain is overwhelmingly broad, groomed and forgiving. For a group with children and mixed abilities that wants the easiest possible logistics on a huge mountain, it is a very strong pick.

It does not suit travellers who want the character of an old mining town, since the village is purpose built and a little corporate in feel, with historic Park City a short shuttle away. Bargain hunters paying window prices will wince, as Canyons is built around the Epic Pass. Experts have steeps and bowls higher up, but the heart of the mountain is intermediate cruising.

The skiing

Canyons Village is one half of Park City Mountain, the largest ski resort in the United States at around 7,300 acres, with the two former areas linked by the Quicksilver gondola. Canyons Village is a modern, purpose built base with hotels, condos, a small pedestrian plaza, restaurants and the gondola all within a short walk. It is clean, convenient and easy with children, if a little lacking in the soul of an old town. The recent development has added smart lodging and dining, so it functions well as a self contained base.

For more atmosphere, historic Park City and its handsome Main Street of bars, restaurants and shops are a short free shuttle ride away, giving the best of both worlds. Non skiers have the town, spas, shopping and the easy trip into Salt Lake City. Evenings can be as quiet or as lively as you like, from a condo dinner to Main Street nightlife.

Getting there
