The high open bowls and chutes off the summit, reached by the gondola when the wind allows, deliver steep, exposed terrain, and there are bumps, glades and cliffs lower down. Charm, convenience and the evening
Mammoth Lakes is a real, sizable mountain town below the slopes, with a wide range of hotels, condos and rental homes, plenty of restaurants and bars, breweries and shops, and a relaxed Californian outdoor character. The purpose built Village at Mammoth provides a walkable hub with dining and a gondola, while the wider town spreads out and is linked by a free shuttle.
The evening scene is lively but laid back, more craft beer, casual dining and apres on a sunny deck than a high glamour resort, in keeping with its freestyle and outdoor roots. There is enough variety to fill a week off the snow, with hot springs, snowshoeing and the dramatic Eastern Sierra scenery nearby.
Choose the Village for walkable convenience and the gondola, or the wider town for more lodging choice and value, using the shuttle to get around. This is a complete resort town rather than a single base, which suits longer stays and families.

Getting to Mammoth is the main effort. The small Mammoth Yosemite airport is around 10 minutes from town with seasonal flights from a few western cities, the easiest option when running. Reno is around 3h by road, Los Angeles around 5h and San Francisco around 6h, scenic drives that can slow or require chains during Sierra storms. January and February bring the coldest, deepest Sierra snow and the classic storm cycles that define Mammoth, the best time for powder, though the high summit can close in the strongest winds. The 2026 to 2027 season should run from November to late May, often longer after a big winter, with terrain opening as the snowpack builds.
March and April are a Mammoth specialty: long, sunny, warm days, soft spring snow and a lively spring scene, when the mountain is at its most enjoyable and reliable.
