What Auron is really like

Auron sits on a sunny high plateau in the Mercantour above the Tinee valley at around 1,600 m, close enough to Nice that you can ski in the morning and be on the Riviera by evening. It is a real village with a centre, a church, shops and restaurants, wrapped around a varied ski area that spreads across sunny, open slopes and some tree lined runs lower down. The southern light and the big sunshine give it a character quite different from the high northern Alps.

Where to stay in Auron

Accommodation is a mix of apartments, chalets and hotels around the village centre and close to the main lifts, with the best bases letting you walk to dinner and reach a lift easily in the morning. Auron is compact enough that most lodging is within reach of the slopes and the restaurants, which suits families. Check the walk to the nearest lift before you book.

Skiing from the village

The Auron ski area is around 135 km of pistes rising to about 2,470 m, a genuinely varied spread of greens, blues, reds and a few blacks across sunny open bowls and tree lined lower runs. It is excellent for families and intermediates, with enough length and variety to fill a week and some steeper pitches and off piste for stronger skiers when the snow is good. Evenings in Auron are relaxed and sociable rather than wild. The village centre has welcoming bars and good restaurants, with a warm southern mood and Nicoise and Savoyard cooking, and the scene is a long dinner and an easy drink rather than a big party. Nice is the gateway at around 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours by road, a genuinely unusual combination of an international coastal airport and a real ski resort up the valley. Christmas and New Year are busy, late January and February balance good snow with the southern sunshine, and the season tends to finish earlier than the high northern resorts because of the warmer exposure.
