Both sit in Italy's Aosta Valley under giants of the Alps, but they are opposites in character. Cervinia sits high and sunny at the foot of the Italian side of the Matterhorn, a snow sure cruising paradise linked over the border to Zermatt. Courmayeur sits lower beneath Mont Blanc, a beautiful old town with a cobbled main street and some of the best mountain dining in Europe.
For those of us who judge a resort by how well the day ends, this is a one sided fight on atmosphere. Courmayeur has a genuine town, the elegant Via Roma lined with bars and restaurants, and a long lunch culture that is the whole point of an Italian ski trip. Cervinia is functional and a touch dated, fine for an early supper but no one's idea of a great night out.

Courmayeur wins on access, and comfortably. It sits at the Italian end of the Mont Blanc tunnel, roughly one to two hours from Geneva, which makes it one of the quickest transfers in the Alps.
