These two Tatra names sit either side of the Polish and Slovak border and answer different questions. Zakopane is Poland's winter capital, a lively mountain town with several small, scattered ski areas rather than one big mountain. Jasna, on Chopok in Slovakia's Low Tatras, is the largest and most modern connected ski area in this part of Europe, with lifts running over both sides of the peak.
If you are choosing on the skiing alone, Jasna is the clear winner, with far more linked terrain, better lifts and higher, more reliable slopes. But Zakopane is the stronger destination, a real town with wonderful food, a buzzing nightlife and proper Tatra character, ideal for a budget trip where skiing is part of the picture rather than the whole point. The skiing
Jasna wins this comfortably and it is not close. It is the biggest connected ski area in the region, with around fifty kilometres of pistes spread over both the north and south faces of Chopok, modern lifts, real intermediate and advanced terrain and decent off piste in good conditions. Zakopane's skiing is scattered across several small separate areas, and while the cable car run on Kasprowy Wierch is a genuinely good high mountain descent, there is simply not much linked mileage. Keen skiers should pick Jasna without hesitation. Winner: Jasna, by a wide margin.
The town
Zakopane wins the town just as clearly. It is a real, lively mountain town with a famous main street, distinctive Goral timber architecture, excellent regional food and a genuine sense of place that has drawn visitors for over a century. Jasna is a modern, functional resort base with hotels near the lifts but little in the way of a town, and the nearest real settlement is Liptovsky Mikulas down the valley. For atmosphere, dining and a place to wander, Zakopane is in another league. Winner: Zakopane.
Cost
Both are excellent value by Alpine standards, with Zakopane the cheaper of the two. Lift tickets, food and lodging in Zakopane are very low cost, and a week there can sit comfortably under $2,000 per person before flights. Jasna is still affordable but a little pricier on lifts and lodging given its modern infrastructure. For a tight budget Zakopane stretches furthest, though Jasna remains a bargain for the skiing you get. Winner: Zakopane.

Both work for families, with the choice depending on priorities.
