Skiing in August in Spain

There is no skiing in Spain in August, because every Spanish resort including high Sierra Nevada closes by late April and the country has no summer glacier, so for August turns you should head to the Southern Hemisphere at the peak of its winter or to a high Alpine glacier, and plan your Spanish ski trip for the December to April season.

Is there any skiing in Spain in August?

No. There is no lift served skiing anywhere in Spain in August. Every Spanish ski resort runs a winter only season, and even Sierra Nevada near Granada, the highest resort in the country with terrain above 3,000 meters, closes its lifts by late April. The Pyrenean resorts of Baqueira Beret, Formigal and the rest shut even earlier. By August the pistes are bare rock and grass, and the resorts are running their summer mountain operations rather than skiing.

Spain has no glacier ski area, so there is no high altitude exception the way there is in the Alps. Sierra Nevada is high enough to hold snow late into spring, which is why it is the best March destination in Spain, but it cannot carry a skiable snowpack through a hot Andalusian summer. Any patches of old snow that survive in the high gullies in early summer are gone by August.

The honest answer: do not plan an August ski trip to Spain. The country is one of Europe's best value winter ski destinations, but in August your skiing has to happen somewhere else entirely.

Where should you ski instead in August?

August is the peak of the Southern Hemisphere ski season, and that is the dependable answer for a real winter ski week this month. Resorts in New Zealand and Chile are at their best in August, with deep midwinter snow, full lift networks and proper cold, exactly the opposite of the northern off season. For travelers who want a genuine ski holiday in August, flying south is the right call, and it is a memorable trip in its own right.

The closer to home option is Alpine glacier skiing. A small number of high glacier resorts in the Alps run summer skiing into August, offering reliable early morning snow before the surface softens in the midday heat. The terrain is limited and it is a half day rather than a full week of skiing, but it scratches the itch without a long haul flight. Our guides to summer skiing in Europe and to Southern Hemisphere skiing cover both routes in detail.

When should you actually go skiing in Spain?

Spain's ski season runs from late November or early December to late April, and the standout month is March. By March the high resorts have a deep late season base, the days are long and sunny, and the spring snow is forgiving, all at prices well below the Alps. January and February bring the coldest, most reliable midwinter snow, and December offers early season value up high backed by snowmaking.

Sierra Nevada, the highest and most southerly major resort in Europe, is the safest bet for a dependable base and skis into late April, while Baqueira Beret is the largest and most snow sure Pyrenean option. For value and quiet, avoid the Spanish Easter and school holiday weeks. Whichever month you choose within that window, Spain delivers a good value ski week. August simply is not on the menu.

Is Spain worth visiting in August for a mountain trip?

For skiing, no. For a summer mountain trip, the Spanish ranges are excellent in August, just not on snow. Sierra Nevada and the Pyrenees turn into superb hiking, mountain biking and climbing destinations, with cool high altitude air that is a welcome escape from the August heat of the Spanish cities and coast. Many ski resorts run their lifts for summer walkers and bikers. If you want mountains in August, Spain delivers, on foot or on two wheels.

But if the point of your trip is skiing, do not come to Spain in August. You would be paying for a ski holiday with no snow. Spend it instead on a Southern Hemisphere winter or an Alpine glacier, and keep Spain in mind for the value winter ski trip it does so well from December to April.
