Skiing in May in Andorra
There is no lift served skiing in Andorra in May, because both Grandvalira and Vallnord close their lifts in April, so if you want to ski now you should head to an Alpine glacier, to Riksgransen in Sweden, or to the Southern Hemisphere, and save Andorra for the December to April winter season.

Is Andorra open for skiing in May?
No. Andorra's ski lifts are shut in May. The country's two big areas, Grandvalira and Vallnord, run a December to April winter season, and in 2026 Grandvalira closed on April 6, with Vallnord on a similar schedule. By May the lifts are stopped, the pistes are bare on their lower and middle slopes, and only patches of old snow survive on the highest north facing aspects. Andorra has no glacier and no summer ski operation, so there is no way to ski here once the winter season ends.
This is not a quirk of one season. Andorra tops out at around 2,640 meters at Grandvalira, which is high enough for a strong winter but not high enough to hold a skiable snowpack into late spring the way a glacier resort can. Every year the lifts close in April and stay closed until the next winter. If a tour operator or listing suggests May skiing in Andorra, treat it as an error.
The honest answer is simple: do not plan a May ski trip to Andorra. Plan to ski somewhere that is actually open, and keep Andorra on your list for the winter when it genuinely shines as a value Pyrenean destination.
Where should you ski instead in May?
If May is when you can travel and you want to ski, you have three good routes. The first is Alpine glacier skiing: a small number of high glacier resorts in the Alps run into May and beyond, giving reliable morning snow and a real ski day at altitude. This is the closest substitute to a normal ski trip and the easiest from Europe.
The second is far northern Scandinavia. Riksgransen in Sweden, deep in the Arctic, runs a presummer season from late May with skiing under the midnight sun, a rare and memorable experience if your dates reach the end of the month. The third is to flip hemispheres: while June is the more reliable opening, the Southern Hemisphere season in New Zealand and Chile begins to stir from late May, and it is the dependable answer for a true winter trip. Our guides to summer skiing in Europe and Southern Hemisphere skiing cover both routes.
When should you actually go skiing in Andorra?
Andorra's ski season runs roughly from early December to early April, and the sweet spot is January to March. December is building early season cover backed by heavy snowmaking, January and February bring the deepest, most reliable snow of the winter, and March adds long sunny spring days on a still solid base. Grandvalira, the largest linked area in the Pyrenees, and Vallnord are at their best across this window.
For value and quiet, the weeks either side of the Christmas and New Year holidays are ideal, with good snow and lower prices than the holiday peak. For spring sun on a dependable base, target March. Whichever you choose, Andorra is a strong value alternative to the Alps in winter, with prices typically a clear step below an equivalent Alpine week. May simply is not part of that picture.
Why can Alpine glaciers ski in May when Andorra cannot?
The difference comes down to altitude and ice. Andorra's highest lift served terrain reaches around 2,640 meters, which is excellent for a December to April winter but melts out through the spring, because below the snowline there is nothing but rock and grass to ski once the seasonal snowpack goes. There is no permanent ice underneath to preserve a surface, so when the winter snow melts, the skiing ends.
The high Alpine glacier resorts sit far higher, with skiable terrain well above 3,000 meters on permanent glacier ice that holds snow year round. That ice is the key: even as the spring sun softens the surface, the glacier underneath keeps a skiable base, which is why a handful of Alpine resorts can run into May, June and even high summer while Andorra and the rest of the Pyrenees are long shut. If your dates are fixed to May, that altitude and glacier ice is exactly what you need to find, and Andorra simply does not have it.
Is Andorra worth visiting in May at all?
For skiing, no. For a wider mountain trip, May is actually a pleasant time in Andorra, just not on skis. As the snow retreats the high valleys turn green, and the country becomes good for hiking, mountain biking and spa and shopping breaks, with quiet roads and low spring prices before the summer crowds arrive. If you have already booked Andorra for May and cannot move the dates, reframe the trip around spring mountain activities rather than skiing.
But if skiing is the whole point of your trip, do not come to Andorra in May. You would spend the same airfare for zero ski days. Spend it instead on a glacier, on Riksgransen, or on a Southern Hemisphere booking, and bookmark Andorra for next winter.

Common questions
Can you ski in Andorra in May?
No. Andorra's ski lifts close in April and there is no skiing in May. Grandvalira and Vallnord run a December to April season, and with no glacier and no summer operation, the country has no way to offer May skiing. Plan to ski elsewhere and save Andorra for the winter.
Where can I ski in May instead of Andorra?
Your best May options are Alpine glacier resorts that run into late spring, Riksgransen in far northern Sweden for presummer midnight sun skiing from late May, or the Southern Hemisphere as its winter begins to open. Alpine glaciers are the closest substitute for a normal ski trip from Europe.
When is the best time to ski in Andorra?
Andorra's season runs from early December to early April, and January to March is the sweet spot. January and February bring the deepest, most reliable snow, while March adds long sunny spring days on a solid base. The weeks outside the Christmas and New Year holidays offer the best value.
Is Andorra worth visiting in May for non skiers?
Yes, just not for skiing. May is a quiet, green and good value time for hiking, mountain biking and spa or shopping breaks in Andorra, before the summer crowds. But if your trip is about skiing, you should travel to a resort that is actually open.
