Skiing in May in The Dolomites

May is not a ski month in the Dolomites, with the entire Dolomiti Superski network closing in early April, so for skiing you must plan a winter trip from December to April, while May itself is best treated as the quiet shoulder before the summer hiking season.

Can you ski in the Dolomites in May?

No. The Dolomiti Superski network, the linked area that covers Cortina d'Ampezzo, Val Gardena, Alta Badia and Arabba, closes in early April, with the central valleys and the Sellaronda circuit typically wrapping up around the first week of April. By May every lift in the Dolomites proper is shut, the pistes have melted out, and there is no lift served skiing anywhere in the range.

Unlike the high glacier resorts of the western Alps, the Dolomites have no summer skiing at all. Their peaks are dramatic rock towers rather than glaciated giants, so once the winter snow goes there is nothing to ski. If you see a 3,000 meter Dolomite summit holding snow in May, it is steep, unpatrolled spring snow for ski mountaineers, not a resort experience, and it is melting fast. For a normal ski holiday, May in the Dolomites simply does not exist.

When is the Dolomites ski season, and when should you go instead?

The Dolomites ski season runs from late November to early April. The first sectors of Dolomiti Superski open around late November, the full Sellaronda circuit from early December, and the season closes in the first week of April. That gives a long, reliable winter built on the most extensive snowmaking network in the Alps, so the area skis well across its whole span even in a thin natural year.

For the best of the Dolomites, target January and February for the deepest, most reliable snow, or March for longer days and softer afternoon snow at lower prices. If you want the quiet shoulder, early December and late March both deliver good value. The one month you cannot ski here is the one in question: by May the show is over until the following winter.

What is the Dolomites actually good for in May?

A great deal, just not skiing. May is the quiet shoulder before the summer crowds, when the valleys turn green, the wildflowers start, and the first lower hiking trails and via ferrata routes open from late May. It is one of the calmest and most affordable times to visit the Dolomites, with hotels at shoulder rates and famous spots such as Lago di Braies far quieter than in July and August.

The caveat is that high mountain huts and the higher trails and lifts mostly open in June, so early May is for valley walks, drives and lower routes rather than serious high alpine hiking. Late May improves quickly. If you are set on the Dolomites and skiing is not essential, May is a lovely, peaceful time to come, but go in with summer plans, not ski plans.

Where can you still ski in May if you must?

If skiing in May is non negotiable, you have to leave the Dolomites entirely. The nearest realistic option is the high glacier skiing of the western Alps, where a handful of resorts keep a glacier open into late spring and summer, the Plateau Rosa glacier above Cervinia among them. That is a long transfer from the Dolomites and a completely different kind of skiing, firm spring glacier snow on limited terrain, open only in the mornings.

The honest alternative is to flip hemispheres. By late May the Southern Hemisphere ski season is beginning, so for reliable May turns you are better served looking south than trying to chase the last snow in the Dolomites. Either way, the message is the same: the Dolomites themselves are finished for the winter, and any May skiing means going somewhere else.

Who should come to the Dolomites in May, and who should wait?

May suits travelers who want the Dolomites scenery without ski season prices or summer crowds, and who are happy hiking lower trails, cycling and sightseeing rather than skiing. For a calm, green, good value mountain break with the high season still ahead, late May is a fine choice.

Anyone who wants to ski should not come in May. Plan a winter trip between December and April instead, with January and February for the most snow sure conditions. Serious hikers chasing the high huts and via ferrata are better waiting for June and beyond, when the high country fully opens.

  • Valleys turn green and the first lower hiking and via ferrata routes open from late May.
  • Famous spots such as Lago di Braies are far quieter than in the summer peak.
  • Hotel rates sit at shoulder season levels across the Dolomites villages.
  • There is no skiing at all: every Dolomiti Superski lift closes in early April.

  • High mountain huts and the higher trails and lifts mostly stay shut until June.
  • Early May weather is unsettled and snow can still linger on higher routes.

Where to ski in the Dolomites in May

For May we would point you first at these, each with our full review:

  • Cortina d'Ampezzo. The grand Dolomites base, superb in winter and the gateway to via ferrata country once summer arrives, but with lifts shut in May.
  • Val Gardena Selva. Hub of the Sellaronda ski circuit in winter and a fine hiking base in summer, with no skiing in the May shoulder.
  • Alta Badia Corvara. A gentle, scenic Sellaronda sector to book for the winter season rather than a May visit.
  • Arabba. The steepest, most snow sure Sellaronda sector for a winter trip, closed like the rest of the Dolomites by May.

Common questions

Can you ski in the Dolomites in May?

No. The entire Dolomiti Superski network closes in early April, and the Dolomites have no summer glacier, so there is no lift served skiing anywhere in the range in May. For skiing you need a winter trip between December and April.

When does the Dolomites ski season end?

The Dolomiti Superski season closes in the first week of April, with the central valleys and Sellaronda wrapping up around then. Some individual lifts vary by a few days, but by mid April the season is effectively over until the following winter.

What is there to do in the Dolomites in May?

May is the quiet shoulder before summer, good for valley walks, cycling, sightseeing and the first lower hiking and via ferrata routes that open from late May. High huts and trails mostly wait until June, so early May suits lower routes and scenery rather than high alpine hiking.

Is there any skiing near the Dolomites in May?

Not in the Dolomites themselves, which close in early April. The nearest May skiing is the high glacier terrain of the western Alps, such as the Plateau Rosa glacier above Cervinia, which is a long transfer away and offers only limited morning glacier laps rather than a full resort.
