Skiing in October in The Dolomites

October is not a ski month in the Dolomites, with the lifts not opening until late November, so for skiing you must wait for the winter season, while October itself is a beautiful, quiet month for autumn hiking before the snow arrives.

Can you ski in the Dolomites in October?

No. The Dolomiti Superski network does not open until late November, when the first sectors begin running, with the full Sellaronda circuit following in early December. Through October every lift in the Dolomites is shut, and while early autumn cold snaps can dust the high peaks, there is no prepared piste and no lift served skiing anywhere in the range.

The Dolomites also have no summer or autumn glacier skiing, unlike the high western Alps where a glacier can reopen in October. Their summits are bare rock towers, so an October snowfall is a scenic event rather than a skiable one, and it usually melts off the lower slopes within days. If you want to ski, October is simply too early here, and the honest answer is to plan a winter trip.

When does the Dolomites ski season start, and when should you go?

The Dolomites ski season runs from late November to early April. First openings are scheduled for late November, the Sellaronda and most ski areas from early December, and the season closes in the first week of April. The area is built on the most extensive snowmaking in the Alps, so it skis reliably across that whole window even before heavy natural snow arrives.

For your trip, early December is the quiet, good value opening; January and February deliver the deepest, most reliable snow; and March offers longer days and softer afternoon snow. If you are drawn to the Dolomites by an October visit, note the dates and come back for the winter, because the lifts will not turn for another month or more.

What is the Dolomites actually good for in October?

October is one of the loveliest and quietest months to visit the Dolomites, just not for skiing. The larch forests turn gold, the summer crowds have gone, and the lower and mid level hiking trails are often still open in fine, crisp autumn weather. It is a superb month for photography, valley walks and quieter visits to famous spots that are mobbed in summer.

The caveat is that high mountain huts close for the season from late September into October, and the higher trails can be snow dusted and cold, so plan lower routes and check conditions. Hotel rates sit at shoulder levels, making October good value. If skiing is not the point and you want the Dolomites at their calmest and most colorful, October rewards you, but go in with autumn hiking plans, not ski plans.

Where can you ski in October instead of the Dolomites?

If you want to ski in October, you have to look beyond the Dolomites, which will not open for another month or more. The most reliable early season options are the high glacier resorts of the western Alps, where a few areas run glacier skiing through the autumn, and the first North American resorts that open on snowmaking late in the month. Both are a long way from the Dolomites and offer limited early terrain rather than a full mountain.

The other route is to chase the very end of the Southern Hemisphere season, which winds down through October. None of these is a substitute for a proper Dolomites winter, so if your heart is set on the Sellaronda and Cortina, the right move is to note the late November opening and book for the heart of the season instead.

Who should come to the Dolomites in October, and who should wait?

October suits hikers, photographers and travelers who want the Dolomites scenery in golden autumn light without crowds or ski season prices, and who are content with lower trails as the high country shuts down. For a peaceful, scenic, good value mountain break it is one of the best months of the year.

Anyone who wants to ski should wait. The lifts do not open until late November, so plan a winter trip, with January and February for the most snow sure conditions and early December for the quiet, value opening. Serious high alpine hikers should come earlier in the summer, when the huts and high routes are fully open.
