Grindelwald
The best all round base, a lively valley hub with the quickest route to the most terrain.
Grindelwald tops the list because it solves the region's old weakness, slow access, with the Eiger Express gondola whisking you up to the heart of the Kleine Scheidegg area in minutes. It is the largest and liveliest of the three villages, with the widest choice of hotels, restaurants and shops, all under a genuinely jaw dropping view of the Eiger.
It is not car free and it can feel busy in peak weeks, which is the only reason a purist might look elsewhere. But for variety, convenience and the easiest mix of skiing and sightseeing, it is the natural pick for most groups.
