The wind is the local menace; when the high lifts close, the sheltered lower slopes keep children happily busy.

Jasna is the best family mountain in Slovakia because it serves every member of the group. The lower slopes around Biela Put have gentle runs, magic carpets and a proper children's area, the gondolas are modern and warm, and the wider mountain, around 50 km of pistes across both sides of Chopok, gives parents and teenagers real skiing to come back for.

The north side is the snow keeper, cold and settled deep into spring, and it is honestly the best snow in the country. The tradeoff is that Jasna is a lift base rather than a village, so evenings revolve around your hotel. Pick lodging near the gondola and the week runs itself.

Tatranska Lomnica is the postcard. The village sits under the sheer granite wall of the High Tatras, the gondola rises toward Lomnicky Stit for the most dramatic views in Slovakia, and the lower and mid mountain runs are wide, well groomed and well covered by snowmaking.

The honest catch for families is that the skiing is modest in size and the steep upper runs are not child territory, so strong skiers will want day trips to Jasna. As a base for atmosphere, scenery and relaxed family skiing, it is lovely.

Strbske Pleso

High Tatras | the gentle lake base

Strbske Pleso is my pick for families whose children are tiny or brand new to snow. The resort sits at around 1,350 meters beside a famous mountain lake, the handful of runs are gentle and consolidated, and the whole place runs at a pace that suits short legs, with sledding, easy walks and cross country trails filling the afternoons.

Be clear about what you are buying: this is the smallest ski area on this page, and confident skiers will finish it before lunch on day one. For a first family winter holiday, that smallness is the charm.
