It edges Zurs for the top spot because it has the same snow and more of everything that fills the evenings, a proper village, the better restaurants and the wider ski area through to St Anton. If you want one Austrian address that never disappoints, this is it.

Zurs

Smaller, higher and even more private than Lech, with ski in ski out luxury and almost no day trippers.

Zurs is a handful of grand hotels at the top of the pass and very little else, which is precisely the point. The snow record is excellent, the lifts are at the door, and the clientele are people who could ski anywhere and choose the quiet.

It loses to Lech only on liveliness. There is no town to wander, so if you want privacy and ski in ski out convenience over an evening scene, Zurs is the sharper choice.

Kitzbuhel

Kitzbuhel is a genuine medieval town with designer shops, grand hotels and the most famous race hill in skiing, the Streif. The scene is dressier and louder than the Arlberg and the apres ski is a spectacle.

The catch is real and I will not soften it. Kitzbuhel skis low, so in a warm or thin winter the snow leans hard on the snowmaking. Come for the town and the glamour, not for guaranteed powder.

St Anton

The best big mountain skiing of any luxury Austrian address, with comfort that has caught up to the terrain.

St Anton has always been about the skiing, steep, vast and snow sure across the Arlberg, and the off piste is the best on this list. The hotel stock and the food have moved upmarket in recent years to match.

It is not as hushed as Lech or Zurs and the apres ski is famously rowdy, so book a quiet hotel away from the Mooserwirt. For strong skiers who want luxury without going soft, it is the pick.

Obergurgl

Obergurgl sits very high in the Otztal, which makes it one of the most snow sure resorts in the country, and it has quietly built a strong line of comfortable five star and four star superior hotels.

Solden
