How a snow gun actually makes snow

A snow gun forces water through fine nozzles under pressure, breaking it into a mist of tiny droplets and firing them into the air. In cold enough conditions each droplet freezes into an ice crystal during its short flight and lands as snow rather than rain. Most systems add a trace of nucleating material or a separate spray of compressed air and water, which gives the droplets something to freeze around so they crystallize more readily.

There are two main machine types. Fan guns are large units on towers or sleds that throw a wide plume and make a lot of snow quickly, while lances are tall thin poles that release water high up to give it more time to freeze. Resorts mix both along their main pistes, fed by underground pipes carrying water and air from reservoirs and pump houses.

The conditions it needs

Snowmaking is governed by the wet bulb temperature, which combines air temperature and humidity. Dry air evaporates some of the water and cools the rest, so a resort can make snow in drier conditions even close to freezing, while damp air needs a colder night.
