Best for a day, a weekend, a full week
For a day trip, drive into the Maurienne. The Les Sybelles villages of La Toussuire and Le Corbier are the closest serious skiing, and after a storm the high open bowls up there ski far better than their modest reputation. Valloire is worth the extra quarter hour any cold morning, because its north facing terrain keeps chalky snow long after sunnier areas have cooked.
For a weekend, Valmorel is the smart all rounder, a pretty village with enough terrain for two days and none of the Tarentaise traffic. Snow focused skiers should pick Valmeinier instead and lap the Galibier Thabor bowls while the crowds queue elsewhere.
For a full week, go high. Val Thorens has the best snow record of any big French resort, and the whole of the Three Valleys opens up from there, including the quieter charm of Saint Martin de Belleville. Transfers and the practical bits
Chambery has its own small alpine airport and a fast TGV station, and the autoroute runs straight up both ski valleys. Transfers are short by Alps standards, but Saturday traffic into the Tarentaise in February can double your journey, so travel midweek or early.
