Ski Resorts Near Jackson

Jackson, Wyoming sits at the foot of the Tetons, and its home mountain, Jackson Hole, is one of the great resorts of North America, around forty minutes from town. Grand Targhee, a snowy, gentler powder haven, is just over the pass for a day or two, and Big Sky in Montana is a long but rewarding road trip for a bigger week. Jackson genuinely has fewer options than a place like Tahoe, but the ones it has are special. We have ranked every resort by how long it takes to reach from town.

Every resort, ranked by drive from town

Jackson is a small, walkable Western town with a busy little airport just outside it, and the skiing is concentrated rather than sprawling. The home mountain is a short hop up the valley, the friendly powder pocket of Grand Targhee is over the Teton Pass, and the giant resort of Big Sky is a half day drive north. Mountain passes here can close in heavy weather, so always check the road first. Here is every resort worth the journey, ordered by drive time from Jackson.

Our picks

Best for a day, a weekend, a road trip

For a day on the snow from town, there is really only one answer, and it is a great one. Jackson Hole is around forty minutes away and ranks among the most exciting big mountains in North America. It has a fearsome reputation for steep terrain, but it also has a genuinely good beginner area at the base, so a nervous first timer and an expert in the same group can both have a brilliant day.

For a weekend, add a day or two at Grand Targhee, just under two hours over the Teton Pass. It catches huge amounts of light, soft snow and is far gentler and quieter than Jackson Hole, which makes it our pick for families and improvers who want powder without the intimidation. If you are planning a short trip, our guide to ski weekends and how to do three days well shows how to use every hour.

For a bigger week, the road trip north to Big Sky in Montana, around four hours away, opens up one of the largest ski areas in the country, with terrain for every level and short lift lines. Combine it with a few days at Jackson Hole and you have one of the best ski road trips in America. Our Wyoming and Montana region page and United States guide go deeper.

Getting there

Transfers from the airport and the practical bits

Jackson Hole Airport sits right in Grand Teton National Park, only a few minutes from both the town and the home mountain, which makes it one of the most convenient ski airports anywhere. A hire car is useful if you plan to reach Grand Targhee or Big Sky, while shuttles run from the airport and town to Jackson Hole itself. The Teton Pass to Targhee and the longer route to Big Sky can close briefly in storms, so carry chains or choose an all wheel drive vehicle and check road conditions before setting out.

Lift passes, transfers and lessons are where a trip quietly leaks money, and booking ahead almost always beats the window price, especially over the Christmas and Presidents weekends. If you are still weighing up where to base, our Wyoming and Montana region page and the United States destinations guide go deeper.

Ski resorts near Jackson FAQs

What is the closest ski resort to Jackson, Wyoming?

Jackson Hole is the closest, around forty minutes from town at Teton Village. It is one of the most exciting big mountains in North America, famous for steep terrain but with a good beginner area at the base, so it suits mixed ability groups better than its reputation suggests.

Can you ski the same day you land at Jackson?

Yes, very easily. Jackson Hole Airport sits inside Grand Teton National Park, only a short drive from both the town and the home mountain. With a morning flight and a shuttle or hire car booked ahead, you can be skiing the same afternoon.

Which resort near Jackson is best for beginners?

Grand Targhee is our beginner and family pick, with gentle, light snow and a relaxed, uncrowded feel that is far less intimidating than Jackson Hole. That said, Jackson Hole itself has a solid beginner area at the base, so first timers are well looked after there too.

Is Jackson Hole too hard for beginners?

No, despite its reputation. Jackson Hole is known for steep expert terrain, but it has a dedicated beginner zone with gentle runs and a good ski school at the base. Beginners stick to the lower mountain while stronger skiers head up top, so a mixed group can ski together.

Is Big Sky worth the drive from Jackson?

For a longer trip, yes. Big Sky in Montana is around four hours north and is one of the largest ski areas in the country, with terrain for every level and famously short lift lines. Pairing it with Jackson Hole makes one of the best ski road trips in America.

When is the best time to ski near Jackson?

Mid January to early March brings the most reliable cold, dry powder to the Tetons. Grand Targhee in particular catches huge snowfalls through this window, while late season skiing into early April can be excellent once the deepest cold eases.
