The Valais
The Valais is the highest and most snow sure corner of Switzerland, the canton that holds Zermatt, Verbier, Saas Fee and Crans Montana. If you want guaranteed snow under genuinely famous mountains, this is the surest bet in the Alps. The decision is not whether to come here but which of its very different resorts fits your group, because the character changes completely from one valley to the next.
Switzerland at its highest
The Valais runs along the upper Rhone valley in the south west of Switzerland, walled in by more four thousand meter peaks than anywhere else in the Alps, the Matterhorn and the Dom among them. That altitude is the headline. Snow here is reliable from late November into spring, and Zermatt and Saas Fee both have glaciers that keep skiing alive through the summer.
What makes the canton special for a planner is range. Zermatt is car free, theatrical and expensive. Verbier is steep and sociable, the freeride capital of the Alps. Saas Fee is the quiet, glacier backed family choice. Crans Montana is sunny, gentle and golf club smart. One canton, four genuinely different weeks.
Where to base yourself
The Valais resorts do not share one lift pass, so unlike the Three Valleys your choice of resort is also your choice of ski area. Pick on character and ability first. Here is the honest read on each, with a link to the full review.
| Resort | Altitude | Best for | The verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zermatt | around 1,600 m | Scenery and snow | Car free, Matterhorn fronted and skiable in midsummer, the grande dame of the Alps. |
| Verbier | around 1,500 m | Experts and apres | Steep, sun soaked and serious, with the wildest apres in the Alps. |
| Saas Fee | around 1,800 m | Families and glacier | A car free, glacier backed village that is calmer and kinder on the budget than Zermatt. |
| Crans Montana | around 1,500 m | Sun and gentle cruising | Sunny, smart and gentle, a balcony resort built for long lunches and easy blues. |
Beyond the headline four, the Valais also holds the linked Four Valleys terrain above Nendaz and Veysonnaz, and quiet gems like Grimentz and Zinal in the Val d'Anniviers. They are worth knowing, but most first trips to the canton are decided between the four resorts above.
Is the Valais right for you?
The Valais is the right region for anyone who puts snow reliability and scenery first. If you are spending real money and cannot face a green Christmas, the altitude here is your insurance. Experts are spoiled by Verbier, while families and nervous groups are happiest in Saas Fee or Crans Montana.
It suits you less if you want one giant linked area on a single pass, in the style of the French mega resorts. Each Valais resort is its own world, so you commit to a ski area when you pick a village. If linked mileage matters more than altitude, read our Three Valleys guide or the wider France guide instead.
Getting there and getting around
Geneva is the usual gateway, roughly two hours to Verbier and around three and a half hours to Zermatt by road and train. Zermatt is car free, so you park at Tasch and finish by train. Day passes run around $80 to $95 depending on the resort, with multi day passes much better value. Switzerland's trains make a resort to resort trip genuinely easy if you want to sample more than one.
Book the extras and save
Lift passes, airport transfers and lessons are where a Swiss trip quietly leaks money. Booking ahead almost always beats the resort window price.

Which Valais resort should I choose?
Choose Zermatt for scenery, snow and prestige, Verbier for expert terrain and apres, Saas Fee for a calmer family glacier base, and Crans Montana for sun and gentle cruising. The resorts do not share a pass, so your village is also your ski area.
Is the Valais snow sure?
Yes, more than almost anywhere in the Alps. The canton has more four thousand meter peaks than any other, and Zermatt and Saas Fee both have glaciers that allow summer skiing. Snow is reliable from late November into spring across the high resorts.
Is Zermatt or Verbier better?
Zermatt wins on scenery, snow reliability and car free charm, and suits all abilities. Verbier wins for expert and off piste skiers and for lively apres. For a mixed group that wants the views, Zermatt is the safer pick.
How do I get to the Valais?
Geneva is the main gateway, roughly two hours to Verbier and around three and a half hours to Zermatt. Zermatt is car free, so you leave the car at Tasch and take the train up. Zurich is an alternative for the eastern resorts.
What does a Valais lift pass cost?
A day pass runs around $80 to $95 depending on the resort, with six day passes offering much better value. We can build the right pass into your trip when we price it.
Is the Valais good for families?
Yes. Saas Fee and Crans Montana are the gentlest, calmest family bases, both with reliable snow and easy beginner terrain. Zermatt also has good ski schools, though it is the most expensive option.
