Crans Montana Ski Resort Review 2026

Crans Montana is the sunniest of the big Valais resorts, a wide balcony of gentle, well groomed pistes set high above the Rhone valley with views that run from the Matterhorn to Mont Blanc. It is the resort to choose if you want sunshine, easy cruising and panoramic scenery more than steep challenge or a quaint village. Experts chasing couloirs and travelers wanting a compact, car free hamlet should look elsewhere.

The verdict

Our honest take on Crans Montana

A sun trap of easy, scenic cruising on a glacier topped plateau, let down only by a spread out, road heavy town that never quite charms.

Crans Montana sits on a south facing shelf above Sierre, which gives it more sunshine and bigger views than almost any rival, plus around 140 km of broad, forgiving pistes and the snow sure Plaine Morte glacier above. It is best for intermediates, families, sunseekers and non skiers who value comfort and scenery. Committed experts and anyone after a postcard alpine village will be happier in steeper, prettier resorts.

Families. A strong family choice. The skiing is wide, sunny and gentle, the slopes rarely intimidate, and the ski schools are used to teaching children in easy terrain. The town is spread out and needs a little planning, but families who want forgiving pistes and dependable sun will be well served.

Beginners. Very good. Crans Montana has plenty of gentle blue cruising and broad nursery slopes, and the open, sunny aspect makes early progress less daunting than it is on a dark, steep mountain. First timers and nervous improvers find a lot to like here.

Intermediates. The sweet spot. Kilometer after kilometer of wide, well groomed blue and red runs roll across the plateau with huge views, and the long descent off the Plaine Morte glacier is a genuine highlight. Confident cruisers get exactly what this mountain does best.

Experts. The weakest card. There is some off piste and a few steeper pitches in good conditions, but the terrain is built for cruising, not challenge, and committed experts will exhaust the serious lines quickly. Strong skiers are better based in Verbier or Zermatt and treating Crans Montana as a sunny change of pace.

Non skiers. Excellent. Crans Montana doubles as a smart summer golf and spa resort, so it is geared to people who want good restaurants, wellness, shopping and panoramic walks as much as skiing. The sunshine and the views do a lot of the work, and many visitors barely ski at all.

The skiing

Terrain by ability

Crans Montana skis one connected, sunny area rather than several separate mountains, which keeps it simple. The lower and middle slopes are a playground of wide, beautifully groomed blue and red runs, almost all of them south facing and bathed in sun, with the Rhone valley and the high Valais peaks laid out below.

Above it all sits the Plaine Morte glacier at around 2,900 m, which holds snow well into spring and feeds one of the longest descents in the region back toward the villages. The skiing rewards mileage and scenery over adrenaline, so strong skiers should temper their expectations while cruisers and improvers will be in their element.

The village

Charm, convenience and the evening

Crans Montana is really two linked villages, Crans and Montana, that have grown together into a spread out, modern resort town. It is not a chocolate box alpine hamlet, the look is smart and a little suburban, with apartment blocks, designer shops and golf greens that double as ski runs in winter. The appeal is the sunshine, the wellness and the panoramic setting rather than old world charm.

Evenings are civilized rather than rowdy. Expect good restaurants, smart hotel bars and a relaxed, slightly upmarket crowd rather than tables full of dancing ski boots. It suits couples, families and non skiers who want comfort and quiet over a thumping apres ski scene.

Lodging and chalet quotes

Crans Montana is hotel and apartment country, with a good range from comfortable family apartments to polished four and five star hotels and the occasional private chalet. Staying near the main lift stations in Crans or Montana saves you the worst of the town's spread out walks, while quieter spots toward Aminona offer better value on the same pass.

Lift pass and lessons

Prices, lessons and ski hire

The Crans Montana lift pass costs around $80 a day and covers the whole connected area including the Plaine Morte glacier. Multi day passes lower the daily rate, and as a sunny, comfortable resort rather than a bargain one, booking your pass, lessons and ski hire ahead is the simplest way to keep the trip in budget.

Book the extras and save

Lift passes, lessons and ski hire are where a trip quietly leaks money. Booking ahead almost always beats the resort window price.

Transfers and access

Geneva is the main airport and the road transfer to Crans Montana runs around two and a half hours up the Rhone valley. The drive is straightforward by alpine standards, and the resort also connects by train to Sierre in the valley below, from where a funicular climbs to the town, which is a relaxed option if you would rather not drive. A private transfer, train or hire car all work well.

A smooth airport to resort transfer sets the tone for the week. Book ahead, especially over peak weeks.

The best weeks to ski Crans Montana

Crans Montana is sunny and reliably snowy on its upper slopes, so the main season runs from early December into April. January and February bring the coldest, most dependable snow on the lower pistes and the busiest weeks, which is the safest bet if snow cover on the sunny lower runs matters most to you.

March is arguably the nicest time here, with long, warm, sunny days, a strong base up on the Plaine Morte glacier and that famous Valais light. If you care more about sunshine and easy cruising than fresh powder, late season is the value sweet spot at Crans Montana.

Questions worth asking

Crans Montana FAQs

Is Crans Montana good for beginners?

Yes. It has broad nursery areas and plenty of gentle, sunny blue runs, and good ski schools used to teaching in easy terrain. The open, well lit aspect makes early progress less intimidating than a steep, shaded mountain, so first timers and nervous improvers do well here.

Is Crans Montana snow sure?

Reasonably. The upper slopes and the Plaine Morte glacier at around 2,900 m hold snow reliably from December into spring, but the lower, south facing pistes can soften in warm spells. Heavy snowmaking covers the key runs back to the villages, so the home stretch usually stays skiable.

How expensive is Crans Montana?

It is a comfortable, upmarket Swiss resort, so a week typically lands in the $2,000 to $4,000 per person band for most groups and can rise into $4,000 to $8,000 at smart hotels. Staying in apartments and booking lift passes and ski hire ahead keeps the cost down.

Is Crans Montana good for experts?

Less so than its size suggests. There is some off piste and a handful of steeper pitches in good conditions, but the terrain favors wide cruising over challenge. Committed experts are better based in Verbier or Zermatt and treating Crans Montana as a sunny, scenic break.

How do you get to Crans Montana?

Geneva is the nearest airport at around two and a half hours by road up the Rhone valley. You can also arrive by train to Sierre and ride the funicular up to the town, which avoids the mountain driving. A private transfer, train or hire car all work.

Is Crans Montana better than Verbier?

For sunshine, easy cruising and a comfortable, family friendly week, Crans Montana often wins. For steep terrain, off piste and a lively scene, Verbier is the stronger choice. They sit on opposite sides of the same valley, so your priorities decide it.
