Pra Loup sits at around 1,600 m above Barcelonnette, a purpose built base in the larch forests that links over to La Foux d'Allos to form the Espace Lumiere, roughly 180 km of mostly red and blue pistes topping out near 2,500 m. The southern sun is its calling card. It suits families, intermediates and sun seekers; experts and night owls will find it gentle.
How it scores for your group
Families. Very good. The resort is compact and ski in ski out, the sun keeps everyone warm and the snow soft, the ski school is friendly and the prices are gentle. Pra Loup 1600 puts most lodging within walking distance of the lifts and the children's areas, which makes the daily logistics easy with young kids.
Beginners. Good. There are dedicated nursery zones at the base and a spread of greens and easy blues to progress onto, all in the warm southern sun that makes early days far more pleasant than a grey high altitude resort. Lessons cost well below the marquee names.
Intermediates. The sweet spot. The 180 km Espace Lumiere gives confident skiers a genuinely big week, with the long ski over to La Foux d'Allos and back the highlight, a full day of varied red and blue cruising through the larches with the southern peaks all around.
Experts. Modest. There are some honest blacks, a freestyle area and good off piste after a southern Alps dump, but this is not a steeps destination. Strong skiers will enjoy a few days exploring both ends of the link, then want the bigger vertical of Serre Chevalier or the Tarentaise.
Non skiers. Better than most purpose built resorts, thanks to Barcelonnette down the hill. The town is a genuinely charming Ubaye valley center with a remarkable Mexican heritage in its architecture, good restaurants and real life, a proper day out for a non skiing partner just 15 minutes from the lifts.
Terrain by ability
Pra Loup's own mountain rises from the base at 1,600 m through larch forest to ridges around 2,500 m, a sunny, well laid out area of greens, blues and reds with a few blacks and a good snowpark. From the Costebelle sector, lifts and a connecting run carry you over into La Foux d'Allos and its sister slopes, the two together forming the Espace Lumiere, roughly 180 km of pistes that ranks among the larger areas in the southern Alps.
The defining feature is the sun. This corner of the Alps is famously bright, which makes for glorious cruising days but means snow management matters: the resort leans on its altitude, north facing pockets and a solid snowmaking network, and the higher La Foux side often holds the better snow. The off piste is fun rather than fearsome after a storm, and the tree lined runs give welcome definition on flat light days. Crowds are minimal even in French holiday weeks.

Pra Loup itself is a 1960s purpose built resort in two parts, Pra Loup 1600 and the smaller, higher Pra Loup 1500, designed for ski in ski out convenience rather than postcard charm. It is practical and sunny, with everything you need on the doorstep, but the real character of the area lives 15 minutes down the valley in Barcelonnette, a beautiful old town with arcaded streets, a Mexican emigre history written into its grand villas, and a lively market.
Evenings up in the resort are relaxed, a few bars and good mountain restaurants rather than a raucous apres scene. Many visitors split the difference, skiing from the convenient base by day and dropping into Barcelonnette for dinner and atmosphere. It is a calm, family friendly rhythm, not a party.

March is glorious here, long, bright, warm days and soft spring snow, the southern Alps at their most enjoyable, with the higher La Foux d'Allos side holding the best late cover.
