Where to stay in Pra Loup

Pra Loup splits into two bases, Pra Loup 1500 and Pra Loup 1600, both essentially ski in ski out from much of their accommodation, which is rare at this price. Pra Loup 1600 sits higher and closer to the main lifts and is the better pick for keen skiers; Pra Loup 1500 is a little lower, quieter and often cheaper. The historic town of Barcelonnette down in the valley offers more character and lower prices again, at the cost of a daily drive or bus.

Skiing from the village

Pra Loup's own slopes are sunny, larch lined cruising terrain, mostly blues and reds up to around 2,500 m, ideal for families and intermediates building confidence with few crowds in the way. Pra Loup is a strong, affordable family choice. Getting around

Both Pra Loup bases are compact and largely ski in ski out, so you rarely need transport once you have arrived, and a free shuttle links the two sectors and the valley town through the day. A car is genuinely useful here given the distance from airports and the option of staying cheaper in Barcelonnette, but it is not essential once you are settled in resort. Snow chains and a little mountain driving confidence help on the access road in poor weather.

Getting there

Access is the one real cost of Pra Loup's value. Nice airport is around 2 hours 30 minutes by road and Marseille around 3 hours, so it is a longer transfer than the northern resorts and best suited to a full week rather than a flying weekend. A hire car is the sensible choice for most groups, both for the transfer and for flexibility once there. January and early February give the most reliable cold snow and the quietest, cheapest weeks outside the school holidays, and the southern Alps often hold good conditions when storms track south. February half term is busiest and priciest. March brings long, warm, sunny days that are a delight here, but because the slopes are sunny you should plan to ski high in the afternoons.
