Sapporo Teine is the best ski mountain you can reach as a day trip from a major city anywhere in the world, a former Olympic venue barely an hour from central Sapporo that catches the famous light Hokkaido powder. It splits into two zones, the gentle Olympia area lower down and the steeper, snowier Highland area above, with terrific tree skiing, big drops of dry snow and sweeping views over Sapporo and Ishikari Bay. The honest catch is that it is much smaller than Niseko or the big destination resorts, there is no slopeside village, and it works best as a city based day trip rather than a self contained resort week.

Intermediates and families are well served by the wide groomers and gentle Olympia slopes, and the 1972 Winter Olympics heritage gives the mountain a sense of history. Skied as a day trip from the city, though, it is hard to beat for the snow to effort ratio.

The Highland zone is the draw for keen skiers, with steeper runs, gladed tree skiing and the deep, dry Hokkaido powder that falls frequently through the season, all set against panoramic views over Sapporo and Ishikari Bay. The Olympia zone lower down is gentler, ideal for beginners, families and easy cruising. Because so many visitors treat Teine as a quick day trip rather than a base, the powder stays untracked longer here than at the famous destination resorts, which is a real and underrated advantage.
