Meiringen Hasliberg is the best value family day on snow in the expensive Bernese Oberland, a sunny, well groomed mountain that costs around a third less than its famous neighbors over the ridge. Book it if you are a family or an easy going intermediate who wants Swiss scenery, soft sunny pistes and a bill that does not need explaining to your accountant. Skip it if you are an expert chasing steeps and vertical, or you need snow sure skiing all the way to the door, because the lower slopes are sunny and the season can shorten at village level.

Meiringen Hasliberg pairs the valley town of Meiringen at around 600 m with the Hasliberg sun terrace above it, skiing on broad, well groomed slopes up to Planplatten at around 2,433 m. Day passes run around $65, well under the marquee Jungfrau prices, and the views over the Haslital are superb. It suits families and cruising intermediates beautifully; experts and snow purists will want more.
How it scores for your group
Families. Excellent, and the whole reason to come. The Hasliberg side is a broad sun terrace of gentle, well groomed slopes with dedicated kids' areas, a sledding run and a ski school that does not cost a small fortune. Crucially, the prices across passes, lessons and lunch all sit below the Jungfrau resorts an hour away, which is exactly where a family budget is won or lost.
Beginners. Very good. The lower and mid mountain blues are wide, sunny and forgiving, the kind of terrain that builds confidence fast, and the lift system is simple to learn. A first timer will have a happy, low stress week here for noticeably less than the famous names nearby.
Intermediates. The core audience. Around 60 km of mostly blue and red cruising rolls down from Planplatten with long, sunny, view filled runs that reward a relaxed skier more than an aggressive one. Confident intermediates will have covered it within a few days, at which point the move is a day trip to Grindelwald or Engelberg nearby.
Experts. Thin. There are a few genuine reds and short blacks off the top, and the off piste opens up on a good snow day, but this is not a steep mountain and an expert will be bored by the second afternoon. Come for the family value, not the challenge.
Non skiers. Well served, with a literary twist. The Reichenbach Falls above Meiringen are the spot where Sherlock Holmes fought Moriarty, reachable by a historic funicular, and the town has the Sherlock Holmes museum, good walking and the Aare Gorge nearby. Add easy rail trips around the Bernese Oberland and a non skier has plenty to fill a week.
Terrain by ability
A gondola lifts you from the valley up to the Hasliberg sun terrace, and from there a network of lifts climbs to Planplatten at around 2,433 m, the high point and the best of the skiing. The mountain faces broadly south and west, which is why it is so sunny and so pleasant to ski, but it also means the snow softens through the afternoon and the lowest slopes depend on a cold spell to hold up. Plan to ski the upper bowls when the sun has been working on the lower runs.
The terrain is built for cruising. Long, wide blues and reds sweep down from the top with constant views over the Haslital and the surrounding peaks, and the grooming is the immaculate Swiss standard you would expect. There is enough length up high to feel like a real mountain day, but no serious steeps and only pockets of off piste, so the appeal is the quality and the scenery rather than the challenge or the scale.

Charm, convenience and the evening
There are two bases here, and the choice matters. Meiringen is a real working valley town at around 600 m with shops, the Sherlock Holmes connection and rail links, but it is a gondola ride below the snow. Hasliberg is a scattering of quiet hamlets up on the sun terrace, closer to the slopes and better for ski first families, though quieter in the evening.
Neither base is a nightlife destination. Evenings are about a calm dinner, an early night and an easy start, not slope side bars and clubs. That suits the families and couples who come here perfectly; anyone who measures a ski holiday by its apres ski should book elsewhere in the Oberland.

The stock is valley hotels and apartments in Meiringen and chalets and holiday flats up on Hasliberg, and across the board it costs less than equivalent beds in Grindelwald or Wengen over the ridge. Bern airport sits around 1h 15m away, Zurich around 2h and Basel around 2h, and Switzerland's superb trains run right to Meiringen, so a car is genuinely optional here. Because the mountain is sunny and the valley base is low, timing matters more here than at a high snow sure resort, and the 2026 to 2027 season should run from mid December to mid April as usual. January and February are the safe core, cold enough to keep the lower slopes firm and the upper bowls in good shape.
March is lovely for families, warm sun, long days and soft afternoon snow up high, but watch the low slopes late in the month. Christmas and February half term bring Swiss and European crowds and the highest prices, so for value ski the quieter weeks in mid January or early March.
