Grindelwald
The most complete base in the Bernese Oberland, with big linked skiing and the easiest arrival of any major Swiss resort.
Grindelwald is the all rounder that anchors the Jungfrau ski region. It links to First on one side and across to Wengen and Kleine Scheidegg on the other, all under the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau, so there is enough varied intermediate and scenic terrain for a full week. The village has the hotels, restaurants and life that the smaller balcony villages lack.
Access is its trump card. The new Eiger Express gondola lifts you out of the village toward the slopes in minutes, and the train runs straight into Grindelwald, so groups arrive from Zurich in around two and a half hours or Bern in about an hour with no car needed. It is the resort we send first timers to the region to, precisely because everything is so easy.
