Val Thorens

Val Thorens sits at the top of the Belleville valley as the highest resort in Europe, which makes it the most snow sure base in the region by a clear margin. It offers the biggest accessible vertical, a genuinely lively apres scene led by the original La Folie Douce, and ski in ski out convenience throughout.

It ranks second because the high, treeless setting is functional and exposed rather than charming, and poor visibility days are tough. For guaranteed snow and energy, it is the pick.

Meribel

the central, beautiful base

The prettiest and most central base, perfectly placed to roam the whole area each day.

Meribel sits in the middle valley, which makes it the most convenient base for exploring the entire Trois Vallees, with quick access in every direction. It is also the most attractive of the purpose built resorts, built in tasteful timber and stone, and home to the region's finest catered chalets and a lively bar scene.

It ranks here rather than higher because it is lower than Val Thorens and lacks the polish of Courchevel 1850, but for a central, beautiful and sociable week it is many people's favorite.

Les Menuires

The clear value pick, with the same snow sure terrain at a noticeably friendlier price.

Les Menuires shares the snow sure Belleville valley with Val Thorens and sits right in the heart of the linked area, with excellent access in both directions. Once known for dated architecture, it has modernized steadily and now offers some of the best value lodging in the whole region.

It is still more functional than pretty, and the neighboring hamlet of Saint Martin de Belleville is the prettier, quieter alternative nearby. But for full Trois Vallees access on a sensible budget, nothing here beats it.
