Val Thorens
The most dependable early season skiing in France, simply because nowhere is higher.
Val Thorens is the obvious number one. At around 2,300 meters it is the highest resort in Europe, with a glacier above, so it reliably opens in late November and offers good snow through December when lower resorts are still scraping by. The whole village is high enough that the home runs work from day one.
It beats the glacier resorts below for the top spot because so much of its terrain is high and snow sure, not just a single glacier slope. The purpose built, ski in ski out village is short on charm but long on convenience, which suits a family arriving in the cold dark of an early December evening.
