Best Ski Resorts for Early Season in Switzerland

Zermatt is the best early season ski resort in Switzerland. Its glacier area skis year round, the lift served terrain above 3,000 m is genuinely open in November when most of the Alps is still green, and by early December it is a full resort while others are guessing. Saas Fee is the specialist alternative and Andermatt is the storm catcher to watch. Early season is the most weather dependent booking in skiing, so this list is ruthless about who actually delivers before Christmas.

The ranking

The nine that deliver, in order

01

Zermatt

Number one because it removes the gamble. The glacier sector above 3,000 m skis all year, the linked Cervinia side adds sunny mileage as soon as Italy opens, and the village is fully alive by late November. No other Swiss resort offers this much guaranteed terrain this early with this much to do off the hill. It costs Zermatt money prices; in November, certainty is what you are paying for.

02

Saas Fee

The early season specialist. National race teams base their fall training here for a reason: the glacier above the car free village reaches around 3,500 m and carries cold, well prepared snow from summer onward. The vertical on offer before December is smaller than Zermatt's, but the quality per run is arguably better and the village is calmer and cheaper.

03

Engelberg

The freerider's early bet. The Titlis glacier opens the top of the mountain by October in most years, and when the first big storms arrive the famous descents off the back deliver real powder skiing in November while lower resorts wait. The valley runs come later; early trips live above the mid station. Watch the forecast and strike.

04

Andermatt

The storm catcher. The Gemsstock is one of the snowiest, most stubbornly north facing mountains in Switzerland, and in a generous fall it carries midwinter conditions by late November. The rebuilt village and the link toward Sedrun have turned a cult freeride hill into a real resort. In a dry fall it waits like everyone else, hence fourth, not first.

05

Laax

The Vorab glacier gives Laax a dependable early platform, and the resort points it at freestyle: the park build starts as soon as the glacier opens and the early season scene is young and energetic. Piste skiers get reliable if limited mileage until the main mountain fills in through December.

06

Verbier

Mont Fort's glacier sector and high north facing itineraries give Verbier real November legs in a decent fall, and the resort machine wakes early. The honest caveat: the famous lower terrain needs natural snow, so an early trip here is a bet on the season starting on time. When it does, nowhere is more exciting this side of Christmas.

07

St Moritz

The Engadin's altitude and cold continental climate mean Corviglia opens reliably in late November, with the Diavolezza glacier nearby skiing even earlier. Snowmaking here is among the best in the Alps. Storm snow is scarcer than further west, but early season is about open lifts and cold groomers, and St Moritz supplies both with style.

08

Davos

High valley floor, high Parsenn slopes and serious snowmaking make Davos a dependable late November opener, with the town's scale keeping evenings lively when the mountain day is still short. It lacks a glacier, which caps how early it can start; once open, it builds depth fast.

09

Arosa

The quiet value pick. Arosa's bowl sits high, faces kindly and opens dependably in late November with the Lenzerheide link adding range as December builds. It is the place for an early trip that is about gentle mileage, sun and calm rather than glacier bragging rights, and its prices undercut the famous names above.

How to choose

How to book early season without getting burned

Glaciers are the only guarantee before December. A resort with skiing above 3,000 m can promise you something in November; everyone else is promising you weather. That is the whole logic of this ranking: Zermatt, Saas Fee, Engelberg and Laax sell certainty, Andermatt and Verbier sell upside when the storms arrive on schedule.

Book the bet, not just the resort. For a fixed November date, take the glacier resorts and accept the smaller open area. For a flexible long weekend you can move on ten days notice, Andermatt and Engelberg after the first big storm are some of the best skiing of the entire winter, at empty season prices.

Expect a different day shape. Early season means shorter daylight, high winds closing top lifts, and snow that lives only on the prepared ribbon, so plan around long lunches and treat off piste as closed until proven otherwise by a guide. Our Alps wide early season ranking compares these picks with Austria's glaciers, and the Switzerland guide covers rail transfers, which shine in November when mountain roads do not.

Questions worth asking

Early season in Switzerland FAQs

Which Swiss ski resort opens earliest?

Zermatt skis year round on its glacier, and Saas Fee runs from summer onward on its high glacier above the village. For full resort skiing, Zermatt typically offers the most open terrain of any Swiss resort through November.

Is November skiing in Switzerland actually good?

On the glaciers, yes: cold, well prepared pistes at altitude, often in superb condition. Below the glacier line it depends entirely on early storms, which is why flexible dates beat fixed ones for non glacier resorts.

Where should freeriders go early in the season?

Engelberg and Andermatt. Both catch early storms on high north facing terrain, and a November powder day on the Gemsstock or under Titlis can match anything in midwinter. Go with a guide; early snowpacks are thin and trappy.

Is early season cheaper than peak season?

Meaningfully. November and early December beds run well below February levels, and a glacier week at Saas Fee or Arosa can sit in the $2,000 to $4,000 per person band where a peak week would cost more. Zermatt stays premium year round.

What are the risks of an early season trip?

Limited open terrain, wind closures and short days. Book a resort with guaranteed high skiing, buy insurance that covers lack of snow, and treat anything beyond the groomed ribbon as off limits until depth builds.

When does the full Swiss season get going?

Most major resorts open progressively from late November and are fully running by mid December. By Christmas week the gap between the glacier resorts and everyone else has usually closed.
