Who it suits
Baqueira Beret suits intermediates, families and value minded groups who want a big, reliable, sunny mountain without Alpine prices. The bulk of the terrain is flattering blue and red cruising served by fast modern lifts, so confident intermediates can rack up miles all week, while the high north facing slopes keep the snow in better shape than the rest of the Pyrenees. It is less of a fit for experts hunting steep lift served couloirs, or for travelers set on a postcard car free village, since the base areas are practical modern bases rather than historic towns. The skiing
The skiing spreads across three linked sectors, Baqueira, Beret and Bonaigua, and the layout is a cruiser's dream of long, wide, immaculately groomed pistes that roll across open Pyrenean ridgelines. This is not a resort of huge vertical drops or terrifying steeps, so committed experts may want more, but for everyone from a second week skier to a strong all rounder it is a joy to ski fast and far. The village
Baqueira Beret does not have a single quaint village so much as a set of functional, modern base areas, with most visitors staying in the comfortable hotels and apartments around Baqueira 1500 or down in the beautiful old stone villages of the Val d'Aran. The valley itself is the charm here, dotted with Romanesque churches and handsome Pyrenean hamlets like Arties and Salardu, a short drive from the lifts. It is a place where you sleep in a real working valley rather than a purpose built bubble.
The evening scene is relaxed and food driven rather than raucous, and the Aranese cuisine is a real highlight, with hearty mountain cooking, superb Catalan and Spanish wine and a string of excellent restaurants in the valley. There is some nightlife around the base for those who want it, but the real pleasure is a long, late Spanish dinner after a big day on the snow.
