The character of the village

Les Menuires is a resort built for skiing first and looks second. It spread up the Belleville valley in stages from the 1960s, and the result is a string of linked neighborhoods rather than a single old town, from the busy central hub of La Croisette to the smarter, more recent quarters of Reberty, Les Bruyeres and Le Bettex higher up. The blunt 1960s blocks of the original center are not pretty, but a great deal of newer, warmer chalet style building has softened the resort considerably over the last two decades.

What you are really buying here is position. The whole resort sits high enough to hold snow well into spring, every neighborhood opens straight onto a piste, and the prices sit a clear tier below the famous Three Valleys names over the ridge. Getting around the resort

Les Menuires is strung along the hillside, so where you stay shapes your day. Within each neighborhood you walk or ski, and free ski buses link the quarters along the valley for those staying further from a particular lift. Because the resort is built around the slopes, most people barely use the buses once they have skied in, simply riding the lifts between the neighborhoods on snow.

The drive ends right in the resort, so unlike the car free villages you can take your vehicle to the door. It suits you less well if you have come for a pretty stone village, destination dining or a glamorous late night scene, since the central hub is functional by design and the smarter quarters are comfortable rather than chic. When to go

January and February are the most reliable months in Les Menuires, with the coldest temperatures and the best snow on the high, north facing La Masse. Its altitude means it opens well in December and holds conditions later than lower resorts, so it is a sensible early and late season pick within the Three Valleys. March brings longer, sunny days and softer afternoon snow that families enjoy, while April can still ski well up high but is past the dependable peak. Aim for midwinter for the surest snow and the liveliest apres terraces.
