What Flims is really like

Flims is the grown up, leafy half of the big Flims Laax Falera ski area, a traditional resort village set among larch forests on a sunny terrace in the Surselva valley of Graubunden. It comes in two parts, Flims Dorf, the older village heart with the main gondola, and Flims Waldhaus, a quieter spread of grand old hotels and villas among the trees. Where neighbouring Laax is the buzzy, design led, freestyle focused base, Flims keeps a calmer, more classic Swiss feel while sharing exactly the same mountain.

The honest trade off is that the nightlife and the headline snow park scene live over in Laax, so Flims is the quieter choice. The village also sits fairly low at around 1,100 m, though the linked terrain rises to the Vorab glacier at around 3,000 m, so snow sure skiing is only a gondola away. Where to stay in Flims

The first decision is Dorf or Waldhaus. Flims Dorf puts you near the main gondola and the village shops and restaurants, the easier choice for ski access and a short walk to the lift with children. Flims Waldhaus is leafier and quieter, home to some grand traditional hotels and a relaxed, spacious feel, with a ski bus linking to the lifts. Both are calm and family friendly compared with Laax.

Accommodation ranges from characterful four and five star hotels to comfortable apartments and chalets, and Swiss prices put a comfortable week in the $2,000 to $4,000 to $4,000 to $8,000 band per person, with the grandest hotels and chalets in the $8,000 plus band. Little is true ski in ski out, so base near the Dorf gondola or confirm the ski bus stop when you book.

Skiing from the village

From Flims Dorf a big gondola lifts you straight into the shared Flims Laax Falera mountain, around 220 km of varied, well groomed pistes on a single pass that you also reach from Laax and Falera. The terrain is a genuine all rounder: long blue and red cruising for families and intermediates, the famous snow parks and superpipe over the Laax side for freestylers, and the Vorab glacier up top for high, reliable snow and a long top to bottom run.

This is one of the largest and most varied ski areas in Switzerland, so a week rarely feels repetitive, and confident intermediates can roam the whole mountain. Experts will find good off piste in the right conditions but relatively few seriously steep pisted runs, so the area suits cruisers and freestylers more than hardcore steep skiers. Apres ski and evenings

Evenings in Flims are relaxed and grown up. The village has welcoming restaurants serving Graubunden and Swiss classics, comfortable hotel bars and a calm, pretty atmosphere among the trees, but the loud apres and club scene is deliberately over in Laax. That suits families and couples who want a good dinner and an early night rather than a late one.

The beauty of sharing a mountain is that you can have both: base in calm Flims, and when the group fancies a livelier night, the bars of Laax are a short bus or drive away. For a family or a couple who want big skiing without the party on the doorstep, that balance is the whole appeal.

For families and non skiers

Flims is an excellent family base. The shared mountain has acres of gentle, well groomed blue terrain, the ski and snowboard schools are large and English friendly, and the calm village is easy and safe with children. Off the snow there are winter walks among the larch forests, sledging, the spa facilities of the grand hotels, and the spectacular nearby Rhine gorge for scenery. Getting around

A free ski bus links Flims Dorf, Flims Waldhaus and the lift stations through the day, and on to Laax, so a car is not essential once you arrive. Flims Dorf is walkable to the main gondola, while Waldhaus relies more on the bus. A car adds flexibility for a day trip to a neighbouring resort or the Rhine gorge, but the bus network makes a car free week perfectly viable.

Getting there

Zurich airport is around 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours away by road, one of the more convenient transfers to a big Swiss area, and the Swiss train network reaches nearby Chur with an onward bus to Flims, an easy car free option. The single Flims Laax Falera pass at around $80 a day unlocks the entire shared mountain, which is the only sensible ticket given the size and the link to Laax. When to go

January and early February give the coldest, most reliable snow and the quietest weeks outside the Swiss holidays, ideal for families. February half term is the busiest. March brings long, bright days and excellent spring cruising, and because the Vorab glacier rises to around 3,000 m the season holds up well, with high snow sure skiing available even when the village at 1,100 m is soft. The glacier also extends the early and late season.
