Big White is one of the best true ski in ski out family resorts in North America, set high in interior British Columbia with reliable dry snow and a village where you can ski to your door. The terrain is mostly gentle and intermediate, the ski school is excellent and the value is strong. It is limited for experts and the high, cloud prone setting can bring flat light, which is worth knowing before you book.

The verdict

Big White is one of the best true ski in ski out family resorts in North America, with a village where you can ski to your door and reliable, dry interior British Columbia snow. The terrain is mostly gentle and intermediate, the ski school is excellent and the value is strong compared with the marquee resorts. The catch is that it is limited for experts and the high, cloud prone setting can deliver flat light.

Who it is for: families, beginners and intermediates who want easy, convenient skiing, dependable snow and genuine ski in ski out at a sensible price.

Who should skip it: experts chasing big steeps and vertical, and travelers who want a lively town, nightlife or dramatic alpine scenery.

Who it suits

Families

Outstanding. This is Big White's reason for being. The true ski in ski out village means children can ski to and from accommodation, the terrain is gentle and forgiving, the ski school is excellent and there is tubing, night skiing and an ice rink for downtime. Few resorts make a family week this easy.

Beginners

Excellent. Wide, gentle learning areas, lots of easy green and blue terrain and patient instruction make Big White one of the best places in North America to learn. The convenient village removes most of the daily logistics that stress out first timers.

Intermediates

Very good. More than half the mountain is intermediate terrain, with long, well groomed cruisers and plenty of easy tree skiing to build confidence in. Intermediates rarely run out of comfortable runs across a week.

Experts

Limited. There is some steeper terrain, gladed trees and a little chute skiing in areas like the Cliff, but the resort is not built for hard chargers. Experts who need big steeps and vertical should pair Big White with a trip to Revelstoke or the Rockies.

Non skiers

Fair. The village is compact and convenient, with restaurants, tubing, snowshoeing and an ice rink, but it is a modern resort base rather than a town to explore. A non skier will be comfortable for a few days rather than entertained for a week.

The skiing

Big White is built for accessible, confidence building skiing rather than adrenaline. More than half the mountain is intermediate terrain, with long, well groomed runs and abundant easy tree skiing that is perfect for progressing skiers and families. The light, dry interior snow falls reliably and stays soft, which makes the whole experience forgiving.

The signature sight is the snow ghosts near the summit, where cold and rime encase the trees in thick white coats, creating an otherworldly landscape you can ski through. It is one of the most distinctive scenes in Canadian skiing and a highlight even on an average snow day.

The honest limitation is challenge. Strong experts will enjoy the gladed trees and a handful of steeper pitches for a day or two, but the resort lacks the big steeps and sustained vertical of the marquee British Columbia mountains. The other watch out is weather: the high, exposed setting can bring cloud and flat light, so a few days of patience may be needed.

The village

Big White's village is one of the most complete ski in ski out bases in North America. The great majority of lodging connects directly to the slopes, so you genuinely can ski to your door, which is a rare luxury and the single biggest reason families love it. Everything is compact and easy to navigate, even with small children and a lot of gear.

The atmosphere is friendly and low key rather than glamorous. There are enough restaurants, bars and family activities like tubing, night skiing and an ice rink to fill the evenings, but this is not a place for serious nightlife or shopping. The crowd is heavily families and groups, and the mood is relaxed.

Because it is a purpose built modern village high on the mountain, it lacks the historic charm of a European town or the buzz of a resort like Whistler. For its target traveler that is a fair price to pay for unbeatable convenience and dependable snow.

Where to stay

The whole appeal here is staying right on the snow, so choose ski in ski out lodging in the village and make the most of it, especially with children. Condos and chalets suit families and groups best, with hotels and lodges available for shorter stays. Our guide to how to book a catered chalet covers what to check before you commit.

Lift pass prices and how to save

Big White is independent of the big multi resort passes, and its lift tickets are moderate by North American standards, with strong value on multi day and season products. Buying ahead and choosing a multi day ticket is the simplest saving, and family and child rates are competitive. Combined lodging and lift packages are common and often the best overall value for a week.

Lessons and ski hire

Big White's ski and snowboard school is a major strength, with excellent children's programs and patient instruction that make it a top choice for learning. Book lessons early for holiday weeks, and reserve gear in advance. The convenient village means lessons, rentals and lunch are all a short walk apart, which keeps a family day simple.

Getting there

Big White is easy to reach for an interior resort. Kelowna International is only about an hour away by road, with good domestic connections, and international visitors usually route through Vancouver or Calgary. A shared shuttle or private transfer from Kelowna is the usual approach, and because the village is fully ski in ski out, most visitors do not need a car once they arrive.

When to go

January and February deliver the most reliable cold, dry snow and the best snow ghosts, at the cost of being the coldest weeks of the season. March brings milder temperatures, longer days and still good snow, which makes it a strong family choice. The resort runs roughly late November to mid April, and the holiday weeks are the busiest and priciest.

The honest bottom line

Big White is one of North America's best true ski in ski out family resorts, with a convenient village, dependable dry snow and gentle terrain that flatters beginners and intermediates. For families, first timers and progressing skiers who value ease, reliability and value, it is close to ideal. Experts chasing big steeps and travelers wanting a lively town should look to Revelstoke, Whistler or the Rockies instead. For a relaxed, low stress family week, few resorts do it better.
