Owls Head is quiet, scenic and good value, with gentle terrain, recently upgraded lifts and far smaller crowds than the big Quebec resorts, so a family can ski without queues or chaos. It lacks a big resort village and nightlife, but for a calm, affordable weekend with children it is one of the more pleasant options near Montreal.

Beginners. Solid. There is gentle green and easy blue terrain and a learning area, served by modern lifts and quiet slopes that give learners room and confidence. The friendly, low key feel makes it a comfortable place to start without the pressure of a crowded marquee hill.

Intermediates. The heart of the mountain. The bulk of Owls Head is rolling blue cruising with the lake spread out below, and with light crowds you can lap the long runs all day, which is the real pleasure here. A confident intermediate gets superb scenic value, though may want a bigger area for a full week.

Experts. The weak spot. There are a few steeper pitches and some glades that ski well after a snowfall, but no sustained steep terrain, so a true expert will run out of challenge quickly. Come for the views and the cruising, not for the adrenaline.

Non skiers. Modest at the hill, better in the region. There is not much at the base beyond the day lodge and the lake views, but the Eastern Townships around it are full of villages, wineries, spas and the lakeside town of Magog, so a non skier basing in the area has plenty to explore on a quiet day.

Owls Head is mid sized, scenic and, since a recent wave of investment, noticeably more modern than it used to be. The mountain offers around 540 m of vertical and roughly 50 trails dropping toward Lake Memphremagog, with new lifts that have cut the old waits and given the place a fresh feel. The headline is the setting, the lake views from the upper runs are among the finest in eastern North American skiing, and the slopes are usually blissfully quiet.

Match the mountain to the trip and it shines. This is intermediate cruising country, long rolling blues with a view, plus a handful of steeper pitches and glades that reward a fresh snowfall, all at a price and a crowd level the big resorts cannot touch. It is not a mountain for relentless experts or for filling a week, it is a scenic, good value weekend hill that has quietly become a much better one. Take it for what it is and you will not be disappointed.

The base is a tidy, recently improved day area with a lodge and some lodging being developed, set in beautiful, open Eastern Townships country on the lake rather than in a town. The appeal is the quiet and the scenery, not a bustling resort base, and for many visitors that is exactly the draw.

The evening, such as it is, happens in the surrounding region. The lakeside town of Magog is a short drive away with restaurants and bars, and the Eastern Townships are dotted with villages, wineries and spas, so the after ski scene is about a good regional dinner rather than a slope side party. If you want nightlife, this is not your mountain, if you want a peaceful scenic weekend, it fits perfectly.

Lodging at the mountain itself is limited but growing as the resort invests, with some slope side options near the base. For more choice, most visitors base in the surrounding Eastern Townships, with the lakeside town of Magog around 25 minutes away offering hotels, inns and restaurants, and the wider region full of country lodgings, spas and wineries. For a scenic, relaxed weekend, a base in Magog or the nearby villages with a short drive to the hill is the natural choice, with on mountain lodging the convenient option if you want to be right at the lifts.

Prices, lessons and ski hire

Value is a real part of the Owls Head story. A day ticket runs around $70, well below the big Quebec resorts, and less again when booked online ahead, which makes a weekend here genuinely affordable. The recent investment has improved the lifts without sending prices to marquee levels, so the value remains strong. Lessons and rentals are easy at the base, the quiet slopes make it a relaxed place to learn or improve, and booking lessons and any rentals ahead saves both time and money.

Transfers and access

Owls Head is easy to reach from Montreal. The mountain is around an hour and a half from Montreal Trudeau airport by car, a straightforward drive south into the Eastern Townships toward the United States border and Lake Memphremagog. A rental car is the natural choice, both for the journey and for exploring the surrounding region of villages, wineries and the town of Magog. There is little need for anything more complicated than an airport, a car and a clear road into the Townships.

The best weeks to ski Owls Head

Owls Head usually runs from early December to late March, with the 2026 to 2027 season expected to follow the same pattern. The Eastern Townships get dependable cold and a mix of natural snow and snowmaking through the core of winter, with the lake setting adding to the scenery if not always to the snow totals.

January and February are the coldest, most reliable weeks, with the fullest snow cover and the best chance of fresh snow in the glades, though you will want to wrap up against genuine Quebec cold. March brings longer days, softer afternoon snow and the most pleasant conditions for a relaxed weekend, with the lake views at their best in the brighter light. Weekends draw the Montreal crowd, but even then Owls Head stays far quieter than the marquee resorts.
