Choose it for the soak first holiday: mornings on the quiet Torrent pistes, afternoons in Europe's largest alpine thermal baths beneath a wall of 1,000 meter cliffs. Skiers who need mileage, steeps or scene should spend their Swiss francs across the valley.

Leukerbad sits at around 1,400 m in a spectacular cliff lined cul de sac of the Valais, with the Torrent ski area rising to around 2,600 m: around 50 km of sunny, well groomed, mostly intermediate pistes with grand Rhone valley views. The village's real engine is thermal water, public baths, hotel spas and ski plus bath combination passes. Couples, families with mixed ambitions and anyone nursing tired knees will be delighted; hard skiers will be restless by Wednesday.
How it scores for your group
Families. Good, in a particular way. The Torrent slopes are friendly, the village is compact and safe, and children regard a giant warm outdoor pool in the snow as the best invention in human history. Families whose children are happiest mixing half days of skiing with swimming will thrive; families of full day piste bashers will find the mountain small.
Beginners. Good. There are nursery slopes at village level and gentle blues up on Torrent, the ski school is patient and uncrowded, and the baths solve the sore muscle problem that ends most beginner weeks early. A calm, kind place to learn, if not the cheapest, this is still Switzerland.
Intermediates. Pleasant, not plentiful. Torrent's reds and blues are sunny, well groomed and blessed with huge views across the Rhone valley to the four thousand meter Valais peaks, and the long run from the top back toward the village is a genuine highlight. But around 50 km is a three day mountain; the spa is what makes the week.
Experts. Thin. A few honest pitches off the top, some off piste after a storm, and ski touring on the Gemmi side for the self sufficient, then you are done. Experts should treat Leukerbad as a recovery stop or day trip and base at Crans Montana or further up the valley.
Non skiers. Outstanding, arguably the best in the Alps. The thermal baths are world class and genuinely historic, Goethe and Mark Twain both took these waters, the Gemmi pass cable car serves dramatic winter walking, and the village is pedestrian friendly with good hotels. A non skier here is not compromising; they are the one who chose well.
Terrain by ability
The main skiing is the Torrent area, reached by gondola from the village edge and spreading between roughly 1,400 and 2,600 m on the sunny side of the valley. It is classic Valais intermediate country: wide groomed reds and blues rolling over open shoulders, a long satisfying descent off the Torrenthorn ridge, and views that punch far above the area's weight class, the whole chain of southern Valais giants lines the horizon.
The snow record is decent for the altitude, helped by north and east facing aspects on the main runs and solid snowmaking, though late season afternoons soften the lower mountain. Across the village, the Gemmi side is a separate small area better known for its cliff hung cable car, winter hiking and the wild Daubensee plateau, worth one non skiing afternoon even for keen skiers. Storm day off piste on Torrent is short but fun; nobody comes here for it, which means you may have it to yourself.

Leukerbad is a real Valais village pressed against a horseshoe of enormous cliffs, and the setting alone is worth the trip, when the evening light hits the rock walls above the rooftops, cameras come out involuntarily. The center is compact and walkable, with stone and timber buildings, good bakeries and a working village life that predates tourism by centuries; the spa hotels are woven through it rather than walled off from it.
Evenings revolve around water and dinner. The public thermal complexes stay open late, hotel spas one up each other, and restaurants do serious Valais cooking, raclette is a religion here, at prices that, while Swiss, undercut the famous resorts meaningfully. Nightlife in the dancing sense barely exists. The right guests never notice.

January and February deliver the best snow on Torrent's modest altitude range, and midwinter is also when the outdoor baths are at their steamy, snowflakes in your hair best. The 2026 to 2027 season dates should run from mid December to early April as usual.
March works beautifully here precisely because the skiing is secondary: spring sun on the terraces, soft afternoon snow that matters less when you planned a 2 pm soak anyway, and hotel rates easing. Avoid expecting much of the lower runs in any warm spell; ride the gondola down and head straight for the water.
