How it scores for your group

Families. This is the case for Thyon. The base sits high at around 2,000 m with snow at the door, the apartments are true ski in ski out, the local Thyon and Veysonnaz pistes are wide and gentle, and the price undercuts the marquee 4 Vallees villages by a wide margin. It is functional rather than charming, but for a self catering family week with a big mountain attached it is hard to beat on value.

Beginners. Good locally, with gentle blues and greens on the Thyon side and quiet slopes to find your feet. Beginners do not need the full 4 Vallees pass at first, so buy the local area and upgrade once they are linking turns confidently.

Intermediates. The reason to come. From Thyon you can ride the network across to Nendaz, Veysonnaz and on toward Verbier, around 400 km of mostly blue and red cruising on one pass. It is a serious amount of mileage for a confident intermediate, and the famous Piste de l'Ours above Veysonnaz is on your doorstep.

Experts. Covered by the wider network rather than by Thyon itself. The serious steeps, the Mont Fort glacier and the legendary Tortin off piste sit over on the Verbier side, a fair commute across the 4 Vallees from Thyon. Strong skiers can reach them, but they will spend a lot of the day getting there and back, and would be better based nearer Verbier.

Non skiers. Poorly served. Thyon 2000 is an apartment complex, not a town, with minimal shops and almost nothing to do off the snow. A non skier is better off down in Sion or over in a fuller resort. This is a place you come to ski, not to potter.

Terrain by ability

Thyon 2000 is your launch pad into Les 4 Vallees, one of the largest linked ski areas in the Alps at around 400 km of pistes. From the base you ski the Thyon and Veysonnaz sectors directly, then thread west through Les Collons and Nendaz toward the far side of the network. The local terrain tops out around 2,400 m, while the wider network reaches around 3,300 m at the Mont Fort glacier on the Verbier flank.

The honest read is that Thyon delivers volume and snow security rather than thrills. The local pistes are wide, sunny and gentle, ideal for families and cruisers, and the high base keeps cover good from early in the season into spring. The standout descent within easy reach is the Piste de l'Ours above Veysonnaz, a long, steep, well groomed red that hosts World Cup races. The truly hard terrain lives across the network on the Verbier side, so plan your days around the long traverse if steeps are your priority.

Charm, convenience and the evening

There is no getting around it, Thyon 2000 has no village charm. It is a compact, purpose built cluster of apartment blocks at around 2,000 m, designed in the practical, boxy style of its era and built for one job, getting families onto the snow cheaply and quickly. Everything you need day to day is there, a small supermarket, a couple of restaurants, a ski school and ski hire, but nobody comes here for the architecture.

Evenings are quiet. There is no real apres ski scene and no nightlife to speak of beyond a drink in your apartment or a low key bar. The slightly more characterful village of Veysonnaz sits nearby and on the same lift network if you want a touch more atmosphere. For a buzzing evening you are looking at the wrong end of the 4 Vallees, and should base near Verbier instead.

Lodging and chalet quotes

The stock is self catering apartments at the Thyon 2000 base, true ski in ski out and priced for families rather than for show. That is the whole proposition, a high, convenient, affordable base on a huge mountain. For a little more character at a similar price, look at apartments and small hotels in nearby Veysonnaz or Les Collons, both on the same network. A car is useful for stocking up in the Sion valley below but not essential once you are settled in.

Prices, lessons and ski hire

The full Les 4 Vallees pass runs around $70 a day, which is strong value for access to around 400 km of linked pistes, and multi day rates bring that down further. Buy the cheaper local Thyon Veysonnaz area pass if you have beginners who will not range across the whole network, and upgrade later. Lessons and ski hire at the base are reasonable by Swiss standards. Book ski school over the February peak weeks ahead of time.

Transfers and access

Geneva is the usual airport at around 3h by road, but the smart move is Sion in the valley directly below, around 30m away, served by train and seasonal flights. Trains run to Sion from the main Swiss network, and a postbus or transfer climbs the final stretch up to Thyon. A car gives you flexibility for supplies and for reaching the rest of the Valais, but the resort works without one if you base at Thyon 2000.

The best weeks to ski Thyon

The high base makes Thyon one of the more snow sure choices in the western Alps, so the window is wide. January and February are the dependable core, with cold snow across the network and the local slopes at their best, though February half term is busy and pricey.

March and early April are the value sweet spot, with a deep base up high, spring sun on the wide Thyon pistes and quieter, cheaper weeks. The 2026 to 2027 season should run from early December to mid April as usual. Early December skiing is reliable here by Alpine standards thanks to the altitude, but the full network opens in stages.
