It suits skiers who want serious snow, empty runs and authentic village life at Swiss mid range prices. Skip it if you want luxury hotels, apres ski or big circuit mileage, because Zinal offers none of those and never will.

Who it suits
Zinal suits skiers who choose a resort for the mountain rather than the menu. The terrain above the village faces north and holds cold, dry snow long after sunnier areas have cooked, the cable car link to Grimentz opens around 100 km of varied pistes, and the freeride reputation here is among the best kept secrets in Switzerland. Families who like quiet villages and honest prices also do surprisingly well, since Anniviers pricing sits below the famous Valais names.
We arrange five star weeks elsewhere in this canton, and Zinal is the opposite product. There is no luxury hotel, no spa scene and no nightlife beyond a couple of bars. Some of our most demanding clients book it anyway, precisely because nobody will find them here. If your group needs pampering, shopping or a party, choose Zermatt or Verbier instead.
The skiing
The cable car rises from the village to the Sorebois ridge at around 2,440 m, where high, treeless slopes run up to around 2,900 m. Almost everything faces north or east, which is why Zinal regularly has the best snow quality in the region weeks after a storm. The pistes are mostly genuine reds with a handful of steep blacks, skied by so few people that midweek you can have entire runs to yourself.
The link to Grimentz doubles the playground to around 100 km and adds long, varied descents and a superb sector for intermediates. Mixed groups can split naturally: confident skiers stay high on the Zinal side, cruisers head for Grimentz, and everyone meets for lunch with a view of the Matterhorn on the horizon.
Freeriders should bring a guide and take this place seriously. The itineraries and touring terrain under the imperial crown peaks, the Weisshorn, Zinalrothorn and their neighbors, are world class, and the village has a strong mountaineering tradition to support them. Beginners get a small, friendly learning area but should know the easy terrain is limited.
The village
Zinal is a string of dark timber chalets and a few modest hotels at the end of a long valley road, with a core that dates back centuries. It is a real community with a climbing heritage, not a resort product, and evenings are about fondue, a quiet drink and the extraordinary silence of a high valley at night.
Non skiers should be chosen carefully. There are winter walks, snowshoe trails and a small pool, but no shopping, no spa hotels and no scene. The right guest finds it restorative. The wrong guest finds it dull by Tuesday, and we would rather tell you that now.
Where to stay
Lodging means simple hotels, rental chalets and apartments, with the best addresses within a short walk of the cable car. For groups, a private chalet with a cook arranged through a specialist is the closest thing to luxury the valley offers, and it suits the village far better than any hotel formula would. Getting there
Geneva is the usual gateway at roughly 2 hours 45 minutes by road, with Sion much closer down in the Rhone valley for those arriving by train or private aviation. The Swiss rail and postbus combination works beautifully here: train to Sierre, then the postbus up the long valley to Zinal. The final road is dramatic, high and winding, so nervous drivers may prefer the bus or a transfer.

When to go
January and February are prime, when the north facing slopes keep powder cold for days and the village is at its most atmospheric. March stays excellent high up thanks to the aspect, often outlasting better known resorts. Early December depends on the first storms, and late April is for ski tourers rather than piste holidays. If snow quality is your reason for coming, midwinter here is as reliable as anywhere in the Valais at this price.

Zinal is one of the best quiet skiing addresses in Switzerland, high, cold, uncrowded and genuinely beautiful, at prices the famous resorts stopped offering years ago. It gives you nothing to do at 10 pm and everything to ski at 10 am. Book it for the mountain and the silence, and look elsewhere for glamour.
